It's Better When You Don't Understand: Prologue - Europe

It's Better When You Don't Understand: Prologue - Europe

Back on August 20 I extensively about how the music that has come out of Africa over the 40 some years provides an excellent refuge when you are tired of songs being ruined by the hellaciously stupid words that some musicians foist upon us.  You see, when you don't what the words mean, there is no way for you to know how stupid they might.  Now of course the other continents have non-English languages and musicians that sing in those languages.  Funny that.

I next want to tackle Europe.  I am going to roll North and South American musicians and bands that sing in languages other than English since European languages dominate these continents.  I have run into a problem however.  Even if their first language is not English, they tend to sing in English.  Obviously they do this to seek a wider audience, but it kind of puts a speed bump in this project.  I will post a write up on Continental Europe at some point down the line, but until then here's a list of musicians that have betrayed their mother tongue.  This list does not include anyone who has at least half their catalog in something other than English, so Einsturzende Neubaten, Os Mutantes, and Pantera do not appear here.

Linguistic traitors I would listen in no particular order:

  • Les Thugs (France)
  • Sukilove (Belgium)
  • First Aid Kit (Sweden)
  • Bettie Serveert (Netherlands)
  • Peter, Bjorn, and John (Sweden)
  • Darryl-Ann (Netherlands)
  • Blonde Redhead (Japan and Italy ... sort of)
  • Air (France)
  • Bjork (Iceland)
  • The Hives (Sweden)
  • The Nekromantix (Denmark)
  • Emiliana Torrini (Iceland ... seriously)
  • The Knife (Sweden)
  • Herman Dune (France)
  • Fever Ray (Sweden)
  • Lay Low (Iceland)
  • Junip (Sweden)
  • Jose Gonzalez (Sweden ... seriously)
  • The Ravonettes (Denmark)

List of linguistic traitors I probably wouldn't listen to voluntarily:

  • Golden Earing (Netherlands)
  • CAN (Germany)
  • ABBA (Sweden)
  • Scorpions (Germany)
  • Tangerine Dream (Germany)
  • The George Baker Selection (Netherlands)

Of course there are things I wouldn't be caught dead having on a playlist.
List of linguistic traitors you couldn't pay me to listen to:

  • Ace of Base (Swedish neo-nazi scumbags)
  • A-Teens (Sweden)
